PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The aim of Project 1 is to study and analyze the architecture, building design, choice of material and construction specifically for existing building located in a natural setting/environment, which adopts green technology and employs ecological approach to its site planning and architectural building design.

Students need to select one significant work of architecture in any region worldwide and analyze the building in terms of the following criteria:

  • Contextual sensitivity to the place - the respect and celebration of beauty and harmony of the natural setting/place

  • Harmonious relationship with neighbourhood and culture of people in terms of spatial and form creation

  • Emphasis on the use of indigenous / local / natural and renewable building materials

  • Passive approaches or the adoption of green technology to environmental comfort and energy efficiency

  • Methods of construction and detailing which reflects the integration of environmental friendly structure, materials, construction, service and technology

Students are to justify the building selection and effectively present findings by communicating a summary of the architect’s approach to the design and an in-depth analysis of the ecological approach or green technology adopted in the architectural building design.

BOARD PRESENTATION

The selected building for my project is The Kasturi designed by Hijjas Kasturi. It is an eco resort located in Cherating, Pahang. The building designed emphasizes on functionality and sustainability. With the basic principles of tropical architecture and a particular reference to the monsoon coast location, the building is created in a simple form using organic material. The building is then fused with the natural surrounding, encapsulating the design concept of being embraced by land and sea.
